In our most recent Styl.ish feature, we spotlighted ESSX—an independent concept store based in the heart of New York’s Lower East Side. Known for its underground fashion roots and raw creative energy, the Lower East Side has always been a home for those who move with intention and style, and ESSX reflects that spirit.

For this shoot, I had the chance to interview and style Jess Xu, a creative force in New York’s fashion landscape. We talked styling philosophies, creative growth, and her advice to the next wave of youth carving out their place in fashion.

The Styl.ish Process
When we step into a store/space, we come as a small but effective team—a videographer, a model, and myself. We operate in a way that’s intentional yet non-invasive, respecting the flow of the store while seamlessly integrating our process. The entire shoot typically takes 45 minutes to an hour, during which we focus on three key aspects:

Exploring the Store's Identity
We highlight the store's mission, aesthetic, and what makes it stand out. Whether it's a boutique with a carefully curated selection or a space with a strong cultural vision, we bring that to life through storytelling and visuals.

Showcasing the Collection
We select standout pieces from the store's collection, discussing the craftsmanship, style, and overall vibe. This helps potential customers connect with the brand on a deeper level.

Styling and Vision
The model gets styled using clothing from the store, allowing us to show how pieces can be worn, layered, and expressed. It's about inspiration, not just presentation—giving viewers ideas on how to incorporate these pieces into their own wardrobe.
